Hi, I'm Ourania

Biomedical Data Scientist & Bioinformatician

With 4 years of experience in research-driven bioinformatics I've developed innovative solutions for multi-omics data analysis and visualization, in order to derive meaningful insights into desease pathophysiology. I combine deep understanding of biological systems with my passion to apply machine learning to biomedical projects. I'm excited to bring my analytical expertise and software engineering skills to new challenges.

About Me

I am passionate about applying machine learning techniques in biomedical problems and participating in the development of tools and techniques for analyzing big biomedical data. With a solid background in biology and data science, I offer a unique approach to tackling interdisciplinary challenges. I combine my knowledge of ML with a deep understanding of biological systems to contribute to cutting-edge research. I enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment, being part of a team that works in bridging the gap between ML applications to bioinformatics and biosciences. I also enjoy exploring new technologies with potential applications in biology.

Learning and Travelling

I enjoy learning new things and traveling. I have been to conferences and training schools across Europe, and I'm always looking for the next one.

Work

Sep 2022 - Present National and Kapodistrian University of Athens National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Research Associate - Biomedical Data Scientist

As part of the Plasma Cell Dyscrasias Unit at the Department of Therapeutics, Alexandra General Hospital, our research focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms and biological processes underlying B cell malignancies. My role involves multiomics data analysis, integration, and visualization to derive meaningful insights into disease pathophysiology.

Mar 2022 - Sep 2022 Saphetor Saphetor

Production Support Bioinformatics Intern

I was working with Saphetor’s data-processing pipeline for next-generation sequencing: VarSome. It is a clinically certified tool for variant discovery, annotation, and interpretation of next-generation DNA sequencing data for whole genomes, exomes, and gene panels, for individual samples, trios, families, and cohorts

Sep 2021 - Mar 2022 Saphetor Saphetor

Machine Learning Intern

I had the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art ML techniques related to text mining and information retrieval. My learning experience also included: participation in all steps of the publication knowledge graph platform from data collection, data integration and AMP cancer variant guidelines implementation.

Jun 2021 - Aug 2021 Hellenic Centre for Marine Research Hellenic Centre for Marine Research

Μember of the bioinformatics group: lab42open

Collaboration during my MSc thesis on the topic of Named Entity Recognition of chemical entities in scientific abstracts using neural networks. This project had received funding from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), under grant agreement No 241 (PREGO project).

Jun 2018 - May 2019 Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia

Laboratory Technician

I was working on a project involving bacterial protein expression, protein purification (affinity and ion exchange chromatography) using advanced instrumentation (Akta Purifier) and state of the art chromatographic material and methodologies and I was trained to manually set up crystallization screens, to evaluate crystallization trials and to handle crystals of protein - nucleic acids complexes.

Hobbies

Beyond bioinformatics, my next biggest passion is surfing. I started surfing when I was working in Lisbon at the Gulbekian Institure of Science, and I've been hooked ever since.
Surfing in the Canary Islands
While at Lisbon I picked up another exciting hobby, theater. I started participating in the Gulbenkian Institute's improv group after work and now I've been a member of a small theater group for the past 4 years. We've even produced our own plays!
